Minerals of Michigan
and the World
Saturday, November 1, 2014
1:00 - 2:30 pm
$2.00 Admission
Do you know the most common rock on earth? Do know what mineral covers about 60% of the Earth's crust? Minerals form the building blocks of rocks. Rocks and minerals are the source of almost every material that is produced on the Earth.
Most objects that we commonly use today originate from a rock or mineral source. By studying these elements, we can learn how the Earth worked in the past in order to have a better understanding of how it works today, and also our impact on the environment. In this presentation on minerals, you’ll learn what minerals are and how to identify them.
Guest speaker, Gary Bushman, will have rocks and crystals on display from his personal collection. You are invited to bring your own minerals or rocks for discussion and display.
About the Speaker: Gary Bushman developed an interest in rocks and minerals by accident. As a teacher, he taught live science for a year, then switched classes with a colleague to teach earth science instead, and a rock hound was born. Gary is a lifetime member of the Michigan Earth Science Teacher’s Association and has spoken at the Museum at other presentations about minerals. Gary is a self-described "rock hound" who is passionate about the subject.
