Volunteers are the life-blood of Iosco County Historical Museum. Volunteers serve as docents (guides) for visitors, offer their expertise for special events, assist with collections care, work with online research and data entry, and so much more. The Museum depends on assistance from volunteers to sustain a healthy, vibrant museum experience. Only a few hours a month helps us considerably! Whether you already have a special skill or feel like you're all thumbs, we help reveal special talents in everyone! Let us help you discover yours in your volunteer experience at the Museum!
Areas of Support:
Docents (Museum Guides): One of our more frequent needs are for friendly faces to greet and assist visitors on weekends and during special events. These positions, or Docents, serve as ambassadors for the museum and provide friendly, helpful customer service. Museum staff will provide you with all the information you need to make your Docent experience fun and rewarding for you and the visitor. Please consider joining our great team. Choose your own weekend hours (Friday and/or Saturday) between 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Special Events: Volunteer opportunities are available for all future events. The Museum regularly hosts special events featuring everything from speakers to our famous Christmas Home Tour, and our events truly are special. Volunteers may serve as docents, help with event coordination, set-up, sign-in, and more. These are great "win-win" opportunities: your volunteer time allows you to also enjoy the event!
Collections Care: All of our exhibits, collections and displays feature items donated or loaned to the Museum. Every item is recorded, inventoried and either displayed in a current exhibit or carefully stored for future use. Collections care volunteers assist with the preservation and maintenance of the items in our care. New pieces are received almost daily and with our newly revamped storage area, we anticipate easier transitions on new displays, and on a more regular basis. Join us in this exciting process and get "up close and personal" with history!
Computer Research and Data Entry: From time to time we are asked to assist in genealogical searches, or other online research. If you're computer and Internet savvy, we could use your help! Are you quick on the keyboard? Data entry opportunities are also available for cataloging new items and other related duties.
Seasonal grounds planning (landscaping, gardening, etc): Do you have a green thumb or enjoy the look of a "golf course" lawn? The needs of the Museum grounds change with the seasons and require landscaping, lawn care and gardening. If you love the outdoors and like playing in the dirt, your help would be appreciated and admired!
Memorial/Honorary Giving and Planned Giving (Estate Gifts): Please contact the Museum for more information on these opportunities.
Other? You tell us what special talent you can offer and we'll put it to good use!
With new leadership, a beautiful renovation for the museum and a fresh approach to presenting and preserving history, the volunteer experience at the Iosco County Historical museum is gratifying and rewarding.
